The empty sands of the Desert Land comes alive with the Desert Festival of Jaisalmer. It is held each year in the months of January-February. Held each year amidst the rising and falling golden sands of the Great Thar Desert, the desert festival is a complete entertainment for the tourists.
The tourists can witness the rich Rajasthani folk culture during the desert festival. Rajasthani men in ethnic dresses with brightly hued turbans and women in brightly coloured attires dance and sing songs of valour, tragedy and romance. All this will remind you of the rich Rajasthani traditions of the by gone era celebrated till date. Traditional musicians attempt to surpass each other in their musical caliber.
Snake charmers, puppeteers, acrobats, folk performers are the key attractions of the festival. Camels, the ship of the desert, have a prominent role to play. Proud moustached villagers, dressed in their ethnic best, come with their decorated camels to join in the competitions of camel races, camel dances, camel acrobatics and camel polo.
Amongst the big draws of this brilliantly colourful festival are the turban tying competitions, tug of war and tourist dances. The Mr Desert Competition, by and large focused around the length of moustaches by and large, attracts several holidaymakers.
