Located inside the Lohagarh Fort, the Bharatpur Museum houses a marvelous collection of the ancient exhibits and archaeological wealth. The museum was once a huge palatial building known as Kachahari kalan. It then served as the administrative block for the rulers of Bharatpur. It was converted into museum in the year 1944. The museum remains open from 10 in the morning to 4.30 in the evening.
It displays sculptures that were found during the archaeological excavation of the villages. Some of these sculptures were even as old as those designed in the Ist century A.D. Weapons used in battles of the medieval period, ancient paintings, zoological specimens and manuscripts are also displayed inside the museum.
The Art Gallery of the museum is worth seeing. It has samples of miniature paintings that were once done on the leaves of mica, peepal tree and old lithopapers. Then there are paintings of the Maharajas of Bharatpur as well. Different types of guns and cannons that were used during 18th century A.D. can be seen here.
Each of the four sections of the museum, namely Archaeology, Children Gallery, Armoury, and Arts,Crafts and Industry shall fascinate even the most seasoned traveler.
